Change 7 – Save energy, everywhere

In so many places we waste energy. That means we’re wasting money too. Here are some ways you can save energy everywhere and reduce your carbon emissions at the same time:

Use energy-efficient appliances and devices
A really effective way to save energy is to use appliances and devices that consume less electricity and perform better. You can do this by choosing products that have a high energy rating, such as A+++ in the UK or Energy Star in the US. You can also look for features that reduce energy consumption, such as timers, sensors or eco-modes.

Adopt energy-saving habits and behaviours
The most simple way to save energy is to use appliances and devices more wisely and less frequently. You can do this by turning off or unplugging appliances and devices when not in use, adjusting the thermostat and the lighting according to your needs, and using cold water and low temperatures for washing and drying. You can also use smart meters or apps to monitor and control your energy usage. Turning down the temperature on heating, or up on cooling, can lead to particularly good carbon savings.

Drive efficiently and safely
Another practical way to save energy is to drive better. Driving smoothly and steadily, avoiding sudden acceleration and braking, and using cruise control and eco-mode (if available ) – all reduce the amount of fuel you need. Keeping your tyres inflated helps too. A final quick win is just to stop idling your car when you’re not moving. Not only is it illegal in many countries but you’ll reduce local air pollution too.

Think Carbon
As well as the Climate Super 8 it’s important to also have a mindset shift so that you always “think carbon”. This means being aware of how much carbon your actions and choices generate and how you can reduce it. You can do this by following three simple steps: You can do this by following three simple steps:

Cut: Try to cut back on the amount of energy and resources you use and waste. For example, you can cut your electricity consumption by turning off appliances and devices when not in use, or cut your water consumption by taking shorter showers and using a water- saving device.

Swap: Try to swap to lower-carbon alternatives whenever possible. For example, you can swap your car for public transport or a bike, or swap your meat for plant based foods.

Sometimes stop: Try to stop doing things that have a high-carbon impact and no real benefit. For example, you can stop flying for short trips or holidays, or stop buying things that you don’t need or want.
