Change 4-Nothing goes to waste

What we waste has a big impact on our carbon footprint and our planet. The global generation and disposal of waste is responsible for about 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with food waste, plastic waste and landfill being some of the most carbon-intensive. Here are some ways you can reduce your waste and your carbon emissions:

Recycle

Recycling your household waste can save energy and resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can recycle paper, cardboard, metal, glass and plastic in most areas. You can also recycle other items such as batteries, electronics or textiles in specific collection points. Make sure you follow the recycling guidelines and separate your waste correctly.

Cutting back on food waste is important because it has a double effect on cutting carbon.

Cutting back on food waste is important because it has a double effect on cutting carbon. You’ll avoid the carbon wasted from food that’s not eaten but also the carbon emitted when food waste goes to landfill where it releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Some food waste is inevitable, for example peelings, and some may just happen despite your best intentions. If so you’ve got two good options:

• Compost

Composting your food and garden waste can reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and produce a natural fertiliser for your plants. You can compost at home using a compost bin or a wormery.

If it’s available use your local food waste collection service. This avoids the release of methane from food waste going to landfill.

Avoid
The best way to reduce your waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. You can do this by buying less, buying better and not buying items that you don’t need or want. For example, you can avoid single-use plastics, such as bags, bottles or straws, by bringing your own reusable alternatives. You can also avoid food waste by planning your meals, storing your food properly and using up your leftovers.

DID YOU KNOW?
The world produces more e-waste in the year than the combined weight of all commercial airlines ever built.
