Change 3 - Buy less, buy better

What we buy has a big impact on our carbon footprint and our planet. It can be a quarter of the typical person’s carbon footprint and much higher for wealthier individuals. Clothing, electronics and everything you buy for your home being some of the main areas. Here are some ways you can buy less, buy better and reduce your carbon emissions and waste:

Buy eco versions

When you need to buy new items, look for eco-friendly versions that have a lower carbon footprint and less environmental impact. For example, you can buy organic cotton clothes, recycled paper products or biodegradable packaging. You can also look for labels and certifications that indicate the environmental performance of the products, such as Fairtrade, Energy Star, EU Eco Label and many more. Just be on the look out for greenwashing.

Make things last longer

Repair, reuse and repurpose your items instead of throwing them away. This can save you money and reduce the demand for new products. You can also borrow, lend or swap items with your friends, family or neighbors . For example, you can share tools, books or toys instead of buying new ones.

Buy second hand

Buying pre-owned items can save you money and reduce the environmental impact of your purchases. You can find second-hand items in charity shops, online platforms or local markets. You can also sell or donate your unwanted items to give them a new life.
